We love Amsterdam, one of the most lively cities in the world! Great art, bicycles, canals, inventive food, wonderful day trip possibilities, bicycles, history, fun locals . . . and did we mention bicycles?

​The works of Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh get their own museum here, and we think this free virtual tour is awesome.

1. The Amstel river runs through the city, and so the town was named after the dam there. Get it? Amsterdam
2. Amsterdam sits about 3 feet below sea level and is built on 11 million poles sunk into the sandy layer below
3. Amsterdam has more canals than Venice and more bridges than Paris
   
4. There are more than 1 million bicycles in Amsterdam, but only around 821,000 people. Sixty-three percent of the population use the bicycles daily
5. ​Most of those charming canal houses are very small at the entrance (then high and long) because, when built, the owner only had to pay taxes based on the size of the facade. The smallest facade is only about 3 feet wide, barely wider than the front door. Once inside, the house rapidly increases in width
