The deadline by which American travelers need a REAL ID or acceptable alternative to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities has been extended to May 2025. "The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on December 20, 2013 a phased enforcement plan for the REAL ID Act (the Act), as passed by Congress in 2005, that will implement the Act in a measured, fair, and responsible way . . . . Secure driver's licenses and identification documents are a vital component of our national security framework." (from the Homeland Security website)
Visit Homeland Security's REAL ID page to learn more and to make a plan. Keep in mind that a valid passport is an acceptable alternate for boarding domestic flights, but must be in your possession at check in. When the deadline arrives, don't be caught without your REAL ID!
