Memphis & the Civil Rights Museum

Picture
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
~ Martin Luther King, Jr
Martin Luther King, Jr. was tragically gunned down in Memphis, Tennessee at the Lorraine Motel on April 4, 1968. America's Civil Rights history is only one reason to visit Memphis and the beautiful Southern USA.
That motel, and an adjacent building, now form the National Civil Rights Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate.

As one of our nation's premier heritage and cultural museums, it follows the mission to share the culture and lessons from the American Civil Rights Movement and explore how this significant era continues to shape equality and freedom globally.

More great reasons to visit Memphis

  1. American music history transformed here. Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash made their recordings at Sun Studio, changing the course of music around the world. Even the likes of Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake find inspiration in Memphis. Beale Street, home of the blues, is dubbed "America’s most iconic street.”
  2. Known for admittedly incredible barbeque, Memphis's culinary vibe is far more diverse than its famed cooked meat. There's a lot going on for the food lover in your life. Both Cajun and soul food influence and elevate American comfort foods. Asian, farm-to-table, vegan/vegetarian, and pure Southern fare options abound in Memphis's lively restaurant scene.
  3. The Mississippi River is the beating heart of Memphis. The history, culture, and natural impact of the river permeates the city even today. The Big River Crossing is the longest active pedestrian/bicycle/rail bridge in the USA. It connects miles of riverside trails to downtown Memphis. With abundant river frontage and 60 miles of bike trails, Memphis has been named one of the best paddling towns in the country.
