Recipe: Italian Hot Chocolate

Picture

Cioccolata Calda (Italian Hot Chocolate)

Whatever you call it, Italy's thick, rich chocolate-fantasy-in-a-cup is easy to make and perfect for cold winter days--and nights!

Check out our 5-ingredient recipe that will have you imagining yourself in a scenic piazza in no time.
Good news: Italy is a year-round destination; no season is off limits.

If you're thinking about a winter getaway, we can help you plan the perfect itinerary. You won't find beach weather, but you will find fewer crowds, Alpine skiing, and wonderful seasonal dishes and drinks that you won't find during the warmer months. Add the fact that Italians know how to celebrate winter holidays in style, and you'll find a winning combination.

Like this decadent Italian-style hot chocolate. Well-described as a molten pudding of sorts, a cup of this tasty delight will leave you feeling indulged and, we imagine, happier than before you took your first sip.

Play around with this recipe, and make it yours.

And let us help you plan your trip to Bella Italia any time of year.

Serves: 2-4
Time: about 10 minutes
Ingredients:
  • 4 oz baking chocolate, dark, chopped (70% cacao or more)
  • 1.5 cups whole milk
  • 2 Tbsp white sugar
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • pinch of salt

Instructions:
  1. Add sugar and cornstarch to a saucepan over medium heat
  2. Add about 1/4 cup of the milk; whisk until dissolved
  3. Add a pinch of salt, and the rest of the milk, stirring occasionally until the milk thickens and just begins to simmer
  4. Remove from stovetop and add the chopped baking chocolate. Whisk until fully dissolved
  5. Divide between 2-4 cups (it's rich, so small cups are sufficient)
  6. Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings if desired
