Think winter in Iceland is out of the question? Not with this scenic, exciting hunt for the Northern Lights!

Only visible from mid-October through March, the Northern Lights are a natural light phenomenon that requires distance from city light pollution for best observation.
If the night is clear, and the conditions are right, you can watch nature’s multicolor lights dance across the sky. Our Iceland winter itinerary provides lots of opportunities to get away from the cities for optimal hunting of this unpredictable, yet spectacular, show.
But Iceland is much more than Northern Lights.
Think natural hot springs, impressive waterfalls, volcanos, glaciers, and icebergs. With temperatures on average above New York City’s, you can experience one of the most exciting natural landscapes on earth, rub elbows with fun-loving locals, and feast on award-winning cuisine.
Majesty, pampering, and excitement can all be yours on an Iceland adventure.

Day 1: Reykjavik Arrival
Welcome to the land of fire and ice. Your driver will meet you at Iceland’s Keflavik Airport upon your early morning arrival, and transport you to your Reykjavik hotel, approximately 45 minutes away. We’ve booked your room to be ready for you, so you can check in, have a delicious hot breakfast, refresh, and rejuvenate. Meet your guide in the hotel lobby late this morning.
Discover the capital city of Reykjavik on a walking tour, experiencing its charming architecture and beautiful, brightly colored rooftops. The city is regarded as the world’s most sustainable cities, renowned for being one of the cleanest and “greenest” cities in the world.
The balance of your day is at leisure, but we’ll make plenty of suggestions for interesting nearby options. Reykjavik is a modern and vibrant city, the largest in Iceland by far, and the food scene is both inventive and traditional.
Enjoy a Welcome Dinner with your group tonight, dining on scrumptious Icelandic specialties.
If Northern Lights viewing is optimal tonight, we’ll get you away from the city lights to hunt this elusive light show.

Day 2: Wandering The Whale Fjord - Hvalfjörður
Today we’ll journey to Hvalfjordur (Hvalfjörður), a stunning fjord known for its wild beauty. The fjord's entrance is just 30 minutes drive from Reykjavík. We then enter what seems like another country, driving almost deserted roads, shadowed by imposing mountains. Our guide will share some cultural tales of the trolls and monsters that have long inhabited this valley. You will learn of Hvalfjordur's history (and Iceland's) since the settlement in the 9th Century. We will stop often to walk, sit, take photos or watch birds at some of the many waterfalls, beaches and bays. |
We will visit a working farm, where we'll relax, refresh and experience something of Icelandic rural life. Enjoy a traditional, wholesome lamb soup (or delicious vegetable soup for our vegetarians!) and sample some other home-grown delicacies. Visitors have the opportunity to meet some of the sheep and learn more about the farm.
We return with a warm and fuzzy feeling to Reykjavík via the tunnel, soaking up our last views of Hvalfjordur.
If this is the night the Northern Lights viewing is optimal, we’ll take that late-night drive into the countryside to hunt them.

Day 3: Golden Circle
Our first stop of the day will be Thingvellir National Park, a meeting place of old Icelandic clans. It is also where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet above ground. Ready for a relaxing and authentic Icelandic hot spring experience? We’ve got you covered! Located in the Golden Circle area, we'll take you to a natural hot spring pool for a true Icelandic feeling. Next we'll visit a geothermal, sustainable, family-owned farm for a short tour and a hearty lunch in the greenhouse among the produce. Here, it smells and feels like summer all year. You'll have a chance to meet Icelandic horses, too, a compact, protected breed. |
Onward we go to Strokkur Geyser, which erupts every 10 minutes. Stop at Gullfoss Waterfall, one of the most photographed spots in all of Iceland.
We’ll stay in the small village of Selfoss tonight, where you’ll have plenty of convenient choices for your independent dinner, and where you can keep watch for the Northern Lights. B,L

Day 4: LAVA Centre, Skogafoss Waterfall & Folk Museum & Black Sand Beach
First, we visit the interactive LAVA Center to learn about Iceland's volcanoes, and how their eruptions and lava flows have shaped the country over time. We’ll visit the Skogar Folk Museum to explore Iceland's cultural heritage and learn about the lives of Iceland's early settlers through an array of tools, books, and handicrafts. Experience the nearby Skogafoss Waterfall, where on sunny days a double rainbow is often visible. Black Sand Beach is wild and wonderful. Discover the rock formations there along with the magical legend of its history. |
We’ll stay in Vik tonight, the first of two nights in this ideal location. Request a wake up call if the Northern Lights are visible after bedtime. It's a thing here! B, D

Day 5: Vatnajokull National Park: Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach
Enjoy a relaxed morning before we head toward Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. En route, we’ll stop for a satisfying hot lunch in a cozy location where you can enjoy a view of the surrounding countryside. On we go to Glacier Lagoon, dotted with crystal-blue icebergs, said to be one of the greatest wonders of nature in Iceland. The surface is at sea level and seawater flows into the lagoon at high tide. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull, and large icebergs float on the lagoon. The lagoon is not very wide but it is up to 250 meters deep which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland. |
You’ll get to taste the pristine 1000 year old ice and, if you are lucky, you might even see some seals.
We’ll make a stop at nearby Diamond Beach where the broken pieces of glacial ice look like diamonds on the black sand. It’s back to Vik for the night where you’ll want to put in a request with the hotel to be notified if the Northern Lights are on display! B, L

Day 6: Seljalandsfoss Waterfall & Blue Lagoon
Journey to the beautiful Seljalandsfoss Waterfall where, weather permitting, the sure-footed can walk the trail that takes you behind the 60-meter falls. Then it’s onward for a magical experience at the Blue Lagoon, an otherworldly wonder in the heart of a volcanic landscape. Relaxing. Rejuvenating. Unforgettable. You’ll have time to soak in the therapeutic waters, enjoy the cleansing, revitalizing powers of a silica and algae mask, and a beverage of choice at the swim up bar. Bring your swimsuit! A towel is provided. In this tranquil state we’ll continue on to Reykjavik. This evening celebrate your travels with an included farewell dinner. B, D |

Exclusions:
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomena dependent upon weather and other conditions. From mid-October through March, they often dance across the night sky. When active, they are best viewed away from light pollution. On this itinerary, we provide many opportunities to hunt the night skies away from the city lights, but we cannot and do not guarantee you will see the Northern Lights. |
