Traveling outside the USA with a valid passport seems a no-brainer, but for passport newbies—or for folks who haven’t worried about their passports in almost 10 years—it’s good to keep in mind a few important tips.

1. A valid passport is required for all travel outside the USA. Granted, there are a couple of US territories that do not require them, but for United States citizens traveling to Europe (and even to Canada, Mexico, and most Caribbean locations), a passport is required. Passports for minors under age 16 expire 5 years after the issue date; adult passports expire in 10 years.

Pros:

• Admire the changing landscape as you go & dock in the cities on your route (rather than far away)
• Visit some of the world's great cities and sites--included and optional excursions (some by motorcoach) help you explore with ease 
• No need for a guide book--guided tours and curated experiences, both included and optional, are taken care of for you
• Stress-free travel
• Unpack once--​your ship is a floating, luxury boutique hotel with many amenities
• Smaller ships & intimate experience--most river cruises max out at 150 passengers
• Shipboard dining is elegant, varied, and all meals are included

Cons:

• Younger travelers are scarce--median age is mid-60s. Many passengers are significantly older. However, ships are not suitable for wheelchair-bound passengers or those with severe mobility issues
• Relatively high daily cost
• Limited time for exploring local communities & dining on your own
• No itinerary flexibility; limited customization
• Opportunity to dine locally and authentically is limited or at extra cost with optional excursions
• Quick visits to most destinations on the route--usually only half day, maximum, with some exceptions
• Unlike ocean cruising, onboard entertainment is minimal
