6 important things to know about COVID-era trip insurance

While many of us are eager to travel again, we all have questions about "what ifs" during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We asked our friends at SquareMouth to shed some light on the facts.

1. Not all trip protection policies include coverage related to COVID-19, but there are policies that do.
2. Costs related to travel delays due to a person contracting COVID while in a foreign country may be covered under the Travel Delay section of the policy. There tends to be a maximum benefit of 7 days or $2000, whichever comes first. So, for example, if a person is quarantined for 10 days, only 7 days would be covered under such a policy.
3. There are varying amounts of coverage ranging from $500 to $2000, and most policies have a daily coverage limit of $150 per day, per person.
4. Standard Trip Cancellation inclusions on most policies are covering trip cancellations when there is a positive COVID test prior to travel (2 days before the trip). Check your policy.
5. If you have trip insurance for upcoming travel, contact the customer service number on your policy to clarify the amount of coverage, if any, pertaining to COVID-related reasons.
