What is the Oberammergau Passion Play?
Since 1634, the village of Oberammergau in Bavaria, Germany, has produced the Oberammergau Passion Play every 10 years.
Why Oberammergau? In 1633 a deadly plague swept through Europe, taking down a third of the population, and threatening to wipe out the village of Oberammergau. The city elders made a vow that if God would stop the plague, they would, with gratitude, present the Passion of the Christ in drama form every 10 years for as long as the village existed.
NOTE: Play language is in German with English text provided. Typical trip package price is $5,000-$10,000 per person depending on stateroom category or type of tour (airfare at additional cost). Availability & pricing vary and are not guaranteed until booked.
