Day 1 - This afternoon our small group will meet in our tour hotel in the 'capital of the North,' Porto, for a tour briefing and an informal get together. We’ll then become oriented to our surroundings by taking an evening stroll and learning a little about this lovely city. This evening we’ll also enjoy dinner together and take the chance to get to know each other.
Day 2 - After breakfast we’ll hit the streets and enjoy a proper walking tour of Porto with the aid and knowledge of a local guide. Amongs our destinations will be a visit to the architectural jewel known as the Bolsa Palace. We’ll also absorb the history and architectural beauty of Porto’s Sao Francisco Church….stunning! … AND visit a very special railway station. Originally constructed in 1893, the Sao Bento station is famous for its wonderful, wall-sized tiled panels. They are amazing! This evening we’ll help you decide where to eat with Portuguese flair. |
Day 3 - This morning we drive into the Douro Valley. This region is known for its superb wine production and scenic landscape. Its vineyard-clad hills invite us to visit an estate and learn all about the Portuguese way of wine making. Of course after this difficult and taxing job, we should relax, have a picnic and drink some wine. After whiling away the day in this leisurely fashion you’ll be free to enjoy yourselves over dinner. Day 4 - We love Braga! Today we’re going to visit this charming town known as Portugal's ‘Rome,’ and learn about the city as we walk with our guide. You’ll see why we love it. Dating back to the 3rd Century, and tied closely to its Christian past, there's a lot to see and learn. This stoic town changes character in the evening, thanks to its university and the students who call it home. It's wonderful! |
Day 5 - Romans, Templar Knights, and ancient history all roll into one in Portugal's first capital city, Coimbra. During our guided tour, we’ll be regaled with tales and anecdotes from this city’s rich past. After lunch we head to Tomar to adventure into the world of Templar knights and their importance, not just in Portugal, but to all of Europe.
Day 6- From Tomar to Fatima. Have you heard of Fatima? Located in Central Portugal, it's known for events that took place in 1917. Apparitions appeared before three local farming children . . . apparitions that the Catholic Church term ‘worthy of belief’ . . . miracles. Fatima has since become Portugal's center for Pilgrimage. We’ll visit and learn a little more about these events and how they tie into modern Portugal's way of life. |
Day 7 - Heading South today, we make a beeline for Lisbon (Lisboa). On our way we’ll stop in the coastal village of Nazaré. Here you may witness some of the largest cresting waves in the world, and yes, you’ll get a chance to dip your toes into the Atlantic Ocean and perhaps taste some barnacles. After a relaxing time by the sea, we drive towards Óbidos. This is a lovely fortified town packed full of historic streets and colorful houses. We’ll give you short briefing and let you loose to explore, before driving into Lisbon.
Day 8 - A hearty breakfast will fortify us for a historic walking tour through the neighbourhoods of Alfama, Bairro Alto and Baixa Pombalina. We’ll learn about local life, the Carnation Revolution and the expectations of modern Portuguese people today. You’ll also have time to visit and explore the world-renowned Tile Museum, The Gulbenkian, and the Maritime Museum. Enjoy dinner tonight in one of Lisbon's famous restaurants.
Day 9 - The Belém Quarter of Lisbon is our destination this morning. We’ll stroll along the coast, and you’ll see where great sailing ships set forth to discover unknown corners of the globe. You’ll enjoy a taste of Pasteis De Belém, from a patisserie that has kept its recipe secret for more than 200 years. We'll also visit the ‘Monument To Discoveries,’ and the world famous Belém Tower. After lunch we head out of the city to visit a place of exile . . . Sintra, now a famous resort town. This evening we'll eat together and listen to Portuguese music being played . . . a lovely end to an eventful day. |
Day 10 - A later start this morning, but only so that you feel relaxed and invigorated. We’re going to cross the 25th Of April Bridge, and, yes, we’ll tell you all about it! The hills, the vineyards, and the Atlantic coast await us in Setubal. Tonight we enjoy a sumptuous dinner together, as we reminisce about a wonderful adventure.
Day 11 - This morning after breakfast, we’ll help you with advice regarding your departures . . . and give each other big hugs as we all depart for other destinations. You'll love exploring Portugal with us! |
